Guided by the goddess of home and fire

The goddess of home and fire is your guide. Her name is Hestia. In ancient Greece, every home had a fire at its centre, the fireplace, and Hestia was that fire. She was the first-born of the gods. Every city kept a public fire in her name, and when settlers left to found a new town, they carried a flame from the old home to light the first fire in the new one. Wherever her fire burned, home was there too.

Be your own warmth. Keep the fire low and steady.

Your ritual, step by step

  1. Light the fire

    2 min

Dim the lights. Light a candle or switch on a warm lamp. Never leave a flame unattended. Take one slow breath. Hestia’s fire was kept burning day and night, and tonight you tend yours.

  2. Cleanse gently

    3 min

If you wear eye makeup, sprinkle a little Cloud 9 on a cotton pad, hold it on your closed eyes for a few seconds, and wipe softly. Then warm Cloud 9 between your palms and massage it over dry skin with slow, light pressure. Add a little lukewarm water, never hot, and rinse. If you still feel the need, apply a water-based cleanser or go in again with Cloud 9. Pat dry with a soft towel. It cleanses without stripping, and it’s gentle enough for sensitive, reactive skin.

  3. Seal and repair

    3 min

Warm Skin Silk between your palms and press it into your skin, from your neck up to your forehead. If a patch still feels tight, add a thin second layer there. Ceramides NP, AP and EOP, cholesterol, squalane and prickly pear seed oil support your barrier, and Swiss Alpine Water, glycerin and algae extract replenish hydration. Hestia’s fire turned a house into a home. Skin Silk does the same for your skin: a warm, protected place to rest. Keep it simple tonight. Skip exfoliating acids and retinol and let your skin rest. If your barrier is damaged, we strongly recommend skipping all acids and vitamin C, and even products that are usually low in irritation. Stick to the basics for a few days, or up to a week or two, so your skin can come back to normal. If it stays irritated, see a dermatologist.

  4. Her moment

    7 min

Sit by the light. Rub your palms together until they are warm, then rest them on your cheeks and close your eyes. Stay for five slow breaths, giving yourself the warmth. Then ask: “What makes me feel safe and at home right now?” Let one answer come. When you are ready, blow out the candle and go to bed.

Make it yours

Ask

Ask your mother, your grandmother or an older woman you trust: what did you do at the end of the day to make your home feel warm and safe? Write down what she says.
